About Us

The Heartland Hosta Shade Plant Society (HHSPS) is a welcoming community of plant enthusiasts dedicated to sharing knowledge, fostering curiosity, and encouraging a lifelong appreciation for hostas and shade‑loving plants. We support both experienced gardeners and those just beginning their journey, with a focus on sustainable, inclusive, and enjoyable gardening practices. Our members come from across the greater Kansas City metropolitan area and beyond.

HHSPS offers seasonal gatherings in the spring and fall featuring engaging speakers, practical education, and opportunities to connect with fellow gardeners. These events emphasize learning, community, and the exchange of ideas in a relaxed, social setting. Additional activities include our annual spring plant sale and a members‑only early‑summer garden gathering hosted at a local member’s garden—an opportunity to be inspired by real‑world gardens and connect with others who share a passion for shade plants.

Our plant sale highlights both new introductions and trusted favorites, along with a selection of companion plants well suited to today’s shade gardens. Proceeds from society activities are reinvested into educational programming, guest speakers, horticultural outreach, and broader support of gardening‑related research and community initiatives. Through these efforts, HHSPS remains committed to education, stewardship, and building connections through gardening.
